"Despite being summer, it was too much effort for Noreen to smile much lately. It suited her much more to be annoyed with the little things around her and feel sorry for herself."

"Have you seen Night of the Comet?"

I ask everyone this question at least three times. It's a must-see. Zombies, a cheerleader with a gun, and a comet that takes out most of human life. I mean, come on. It's a perfect movie.

Night of the Comet, every Steven Seagal movie ever made, and Don't Tell Mom The Babysitter's Dead are some of my earliest memories of entertainment. I do mean earliest. Imagine a six-year-old who new all the words, even the bad ones, to Lethal Weapon. That was me.

My mom was a stay-at-home mom, and I was the last one out. I am the baby of the family which means my parents were tired of raising kids when I came along. This almost meant I was exposed to excellent television early and often.

It is because of this that I decided to write my mom in the theme of an action hero in Licorice in the Time of COVID-19. While the flash fiction piece doesn't include any explosion, it does include a mindless hoard, a fierce enemy from a Facebook group, and the collapse of a mountain...of dog food.

Who knows - next time, I may add an explosion.

Barbara Burgess is a writer which is made apparent by the text in this box and the box above. She is best known for being a multi-genre/multi-writing voice author who throws caution to the wind when describing her writing career - "Oh, I write children's books, holiday romance, and sci-fi. Why? What do you do? Just one thing?" In addition to being a writer of all the things, she is the founder of Pilgrim Fowl Press and a writing facilitator bringing permission to write to the masses via Skillshare and Udemy. The only social media she frequents is Instagram (@hellothisisbarbara). Her desert island movie is Stargate (the original with James Spader), and she has been taking daily mug shots of her morning coffee since before Instagram was even a thing.
